A tremor ran through David’s hands as he tried to unlock his locker. The metal was cold, the key wouldn't turn, and frustration flared. The announcement, delivered during his history lecture, had been a bombshell. The future he’d envisioned – graduation, a job in his chosen field – felt like sand slipping through his fingers.

He finally wrenched the door open and grabbed his textbook, but his mind wasn't on the Roman Empire. Every thought bounced around in his skull, frantic and fractured. He felt the weight of the book, a physical burden, as he started to walk, his shoulders hunched, trying to navigate the chaotic hallways. He could taste bile in the back of his throat.
